13 Science Myths You Probably Believe

scientist1There are some scientific claims that you really should be more sceptical about. BuzzFeed has collected together 13 of these myths, with a short explanation (often with links) as to why these myths are, well, myths. The dozen plus one are: 

  1. Water drains down sinks anticlockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere (too small a size)
  2. There’s no gravity on the ISS (constant freefall)
  3. Humans have stopped evolving by natural selection (sped up)
  4. Lightning never strikes the same place twice (yes it does) 
  5. Water conducts electricity (it doesn’t; impurities in it do) 
  6. Bumblebee flight violates the laws of physics (they create mini vortexes to fly) 
  7. Dolphins are much smarter than other animals (they don’t have a language)
  8. Whether you can roll your tongue or not depends on your genes (you can learn it) 
  9. Astronauts would explode without their spacesuits (freeze and blood boil instead)
  10. 95% of the ocean is unexplored (depends on definition)
  11. Skipping breakfast will make you gain weight (no it won’t)
  12. We only use 10% of our brains (we use most of it) 
  13. Earth is closer to the sun during summer (depends on tilt)
