Kowloon Walled City

Kowloon Walled City

Kowloon Walled City. “Once thought to be the most densely populated place on Earth, with 50,000 people crammed into only a few blocks, these fascinating pictures give a rare insight into the lives of those who lived Kowloon Walled City.” (Imgur, ergine)

I only recently came across Kowloon Walled City, and it’s incredible to see images of it. Although it has now been torn down (with good reason), it’s fascinating to imagine what it would have been like to visit there, and these images really capture the oppressiveness, closeness, and dirtiness of the place. It’s also quite scary to think of the living conditions, of so many people in so small a space. I really don’t think I’d last long if I had to live in a place like that, especially if you’re near the middle and near the ground floor. No air and no light is a bad combination for anyone.

One of the few good things to come out of Kowloon Walled City is the huge amounts of inspiration it gave to artists, especially in the fantasy, science fiction, and cyberpunk genres.

What do you think of Kowloon Walled City? Glad they demolished it, or do you think they should have preserved it? Onwards!
