Age Of Buildings In Map Form

Amsterdam MapQuestion: What can you produce when you are curious about the age of buildings in your neighbourhood?

Answer: Absolutely stunning maps (Wired).

That is precisely what Justin Palmer did after he found a dataset containing the age of all the buildings in Portland. Others mapmakers saw this and did the same, creating wonderful maps of The Netherlands, New York City, Brooklyn, Ljubljana, and Reykjavik.

What I find remarkable about the maps is the level of detail in them. You simply must try out the interactive maps, which provide a wealth of extra information over the simple images shown. It’s great to see how cities have developed over the years, often spreading out from a central hub.

Which is your favourite map? Onwards!
