Nelson Mandela

Nelson Mandela passed away yesterday aged 95. The above video by The New York Times takes a look at South Africa’s first black president. A timeline of his life can be found over at the BBC, along with a wealth of other information about Mandela’s life. The Guardian showcases Mandela’s life in pictures, which can speak more powerfully than words. Below the break is a clip of the last 5 minutes of Nelson Mandela’s speech at his trial, 20th April 1964, in which he uttered the memorable line “It is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”

A great and good man, he will be missed by many. Onwards.
