Over at Smithsonian, they have a creepy collection of old time portraits of parasites, by Marcus DeSieno. He used antiquated photograph development techniques to create the distinct look, which verges between monsters from horror films and beautiful art.
The Smithsonian article provides background information about Marcus, especially why he chose to photograph human parasites. The answer? Fear. That fear led to curiosity, which in turn lead to these wonderful photographs of the parasites. I think my favourite is the blacklegged or deer tick, shown above. By favourite, I mean I like the look of the final photograph the most. I have no desire to be infected by one!
