Walkers, Biters, And Geeks

Walking-Dead-Season-5The Walking Dead has returned, with an explosive opening episode. Instead of spoiling it for anyone who has yet to watch it, instead I’ll link to an interesting article by Oxford Dictionaries Blog, which talks about the different terms used to describe the walking dead, aka the zombies.

It starts off with a brief history of zombies, with George A. Romero‘s Night of the Living Dead being credited as the start of what we today know as zombies. In The Walking Dead though, they are rarely referred to as zombies, and instead called walkers or biters or other names. They’ve also been called geek, which, in the carnival world, referred to a performer whose act consisted of bizarre or disgusting acts. I can’t remember that use in the show, but I’m sure it’s there.

Which term (apart from zombie) would you use to describe the walking dead? Onwards!
