Whereas last week’s Throwback Thursday was about words, today’s is all about films. We start off with Cinemetrics, which “is about measuring and visualising movie data, in order to reveal the characteristics of films and to create a visual “fingerprint” for them. Information such as the editing structure, colour, speech or motion are extracted, analysed and transformed into graphic representations so that movies can be seen as a whole and easily interpreted or compared side by side“.
Punga created Fox Retro, a old-school retro look at some classic shows and films on TV.
Next up, an excellent article on Wired asking “Could the S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier actually fly?“. There’s a lot of maths involved, and a lot of geekery, and it’s wonderful. Short answer? No, no it could not.
Finally, we come to “Everything is a Remix“, by Kirby Ferguson. This four-part series goes into detail about how it is very hard to be truly original nowadays, with songs and films constantly borrowing from each other and being iterated upon. It’s a fascinating insight into what constitutes a remix, and is well worth watching.
