How Do You Pronounce Scone?

SconeAh, scones. Delicious little cakes, perfect with tea, and so utterly British. But how exactly is the word pronounced? Is it pronounced to rhyme with “cone”, or with “con”?

Oxford Dictionaries Blog conducted a survey to find out, and the results are rather interesting. Overall, a slight majority of people pronounce it to rhyme with cone. However, if you look at regional differences, then in the US, they pronounce it to rhyme with cone, whereas in the UK, we use the other pronunciation, rhyming scone with con.

Therefore, the obvious correct pronunciation is “scone”. Onwards!
