Definitions Of Fact, Theory, And Law In Scientific Work

scientist1Over at the National Centre for Science Education, they have a handy little explainer of what a Fact, Theory, Hypothesis, and Law is in scientific work. These terms are often misunderstood by people who don’t work in the field, so it’s always worth mentioning.

The largest culprit is “theory”, as in, the theory of evolution. Creationists love to use this word as a reason to explain why evolution is not true. You know, just like the theory of gravity…
