This speech by Obama is heartbreaking, infuriating, and excellent. You can really tell how angry and infuriated he is at the current state of gun violence and gun laws in the US, and how powerless he is to change it quickly. Living in the UK, I find the USA’s fascination with guns and gun violence, and their lack of rigorous gun laws, bonkers. Obama hits the nail on the head when he mentions how mass shootings have become “routine”. People are becoming numb to the violence. But why do people want firearms? Over at The Guardian, Dean Burnett writes about the psychology of why people want firearms. Protection, recreation, paranoia, insecurity, anger, social and cultural pressures, and many other factors all contribute to the wanting of guns.
It’s a messed up world we live in. Hopefully things can change for the better, and soon. Onwards.
