“So what does a game designer do? Are you an artist? Do you design characters and write the story? Or no, wait, you’re a programmer?” (Liz England)
So begins an interesting article by Liz England, on what it is a game designer actually does. The easiest way to describe what a game designer does is via the use of “The Door Problem”. I highly recommend reading the post, but the general gist of it is contained in the above poster.
As an added bonus, you can use “The Door Problem” to help describe the work other people in the games industry do, like a Creative Director, or FX Artist, or Tools Programmer, for instance. I like that it’s such a simple premise to something surprisingly complex, even if it is just a door. Onwards!
